This mobile application bridges the gap between artists and potential buyers through an innovative augmented reality (AR) experience, allowing users to view and rent artwork digitally in their own spaces. The goal was to create a seamless, user-friendly experience that supports artists in monetizing their work and empowers buyers to discover, visualize, and rent art that suits their tastes and environments.

The app targets two main user groups:

  • Artists looking to profit from their artworks in the absence of physical galleries and events.

  • Buyers interested in renting artwork tailored to their personal spaces and aesthetics.

Our design challenge was to develop an efficient system that allows users to:

  • Discover a range of curated artworks and artists

  • Check real-time availability of works

  • Submit style-based quotations and receive expert consultation

  • Use AR to preview art pieces in their intended environments

The AR Printer App acts as a digital marketplace and visualization tool, combining commerce and immersive technology to facilitate art rental and curation.

The design and development process included:

  • User Personas & Journey Mapping: Clarifying needs and behaviors of artists and buyers

  • Wireframing the Experience: Creating intuitive paths for artwork discovery, consultation, and rental

  • AR Integration: Building and testing a functional AR experience using Unity 3D and Maya, allowing users to place artworks in real-world settings via their phone cameras

  • Development Tools: 3D models were textured in Substance Painter and exported as .fbx files into Unity. The app was then built and tested on iOS.

Positive Feedback on AR Utility: Testers appreciated the ability to visualize art in their physical spaces

  • Artist Onboarding Process: A streamlined flow for artists to upload, manage, and monetize their works

  • Market Potential: Insights into how transaction models could evolve, including tiered fees for rentals

This project underscored the power of combining immersive tech with thoughtful design. If given more time, I would iterate on the business model, focusing on data collection to improve personalization and optimize pricing strategies for both artists and buyers.
